TLD.808 / Re: TLD: Suggestions
« on: March 23, 2009, 07:25:08 am »
I have my own war ideas at the moment. Old ones that I never got around to...   But I did put some fan suggestions in last time so Ill run through here at some point and see.   The old nazgul bit was suggested by mtarini for example.

The Last Days / Next version preview
« on: February 21, 2009, 11:58:29 am »
It's been awhile so I thought we'd post some screenshots of the next version of TLD.   In the next version we are expanding the war to include the far north and have added another five factions or so to the previous set.   The older factions are getting facelifts but I'm just going to show a few shots for this early preview.

From far beyond the sea of Rhun come the descendants of the ancient Wainriders; The wild men of Rhun.  Comprising a loose confederation of tribal bands, which include the Balchoth and other Easterlings, the men of Rhun have long served the power of Mordor.   Now, after years of preparations, they have been loosed to strike the northern flank of the Free Peoples at a critical hour.  Riding agile horses, hurling javelins, brandishing scimitars and spears  and shouting their odd barbaric battlecries. They bear weapons and armor strange to the west, some fight almost naked. Animal fetishes and great horned helms suggest they worship animal gods and spirits in addition to the cult of Sauron himself. Will the shieldwalls of men and dwarves hold against the black rain of their arrows?

Some of the lothlorien update:

Mount Gundabad orcs:

These are only a selection of units from a selection of the newer factions.  Most of the expansion factions are close to finished but it's still wip and some things will change. I'll show some other factions next time.  Maybe updated stuff from Gondor and Rohan, maybe Dale. The release date is still a few months away (before you ask).  I probably won't answer many questions because I either dont know the answer or don't want to say.

I'm not doing elaborate credits in a ss thread but credits to the usual TLD suspects and especially our new guy Brutus.  Brutus did all of Rhun, the Khand helms and weapons and the Wargs above.  Lots of great stuff. Dablade and Merlkir did the elf stuff above and Dablade did the variag warhorse.  Dablade and I did the khand armors. Stefano, myself, Triglav and Octoburn did the orc gear above.  Ah, and Octoburn and prof420 did some of the elf helm as well.....I see a Janus sword from way back too. Sorry, I'm OCD when it comes to credits.

Yeah, I know. I've been watching scale closely.  Quite a surprise when I killed my first troll with an arrow to his left.

Hopefully Thorgrim comes back to sort out the rest.

Hitboxes are less the worry as the gear.  Without the connection points changing you have to have race specific gear for a few areas.   I'd rather avoid that.   But creative rigging may be the only option eventually.  We did that with the troll before.

Once brfedit is out, we'll know what's possible. Until then dwarves are in the "cant be bothered until we know more" pile.  I'm not really solving anything there, its above my pay grade. We have to wait on the smarter people.

Hey Vinter,

As they say, we have a dude but we can probably pad some of his stuff out with another contributor.

Yeah, I think its promising.  I agree the piano isnt working.  Maybe a heavier, rougher drum.  Brass, drum, omnious vocals are really the norm iirc.

Dablade coordinates the sound stuff so if you want to help out with it, he can point out what we might need.   Or you can run it by others here. Or post it. Up to you.

That looks cool.  I figured I could creatively rig if it came to it but that opens up a lot of problems with gear looting, animations, hitboxes, etc.   We're gonna leave dwarves until the end and we'll see what the options are then.

But thanks for the offer.  In general though I dont use stuff from other mods, its just not as fun to make and I only do this for fun.

Hm, there is some info here about getting around some installation issues with .808. I think its a few pages back.

I played it smoothly with an x1900xt and 2 gig of system ram on a dual core system before I upgraded to a 4850 so you should be fine on that score.

My game as an elf crashes as well. I get the same error message as some mentioned before with the thread 623 and m number >0. Possibly the trainer bug... (Whatever that is?)

Problem is, I'm playiing with realistic settings and can't find my save file.

So what now? Help much appreciated... Lemme know if anything is unclear (considering the lack of relevant info in this post, heh).

This one was never solved in .808.  It's *the* significant bug and I never found out why.   Some games it will happen, others not.  It might have something to do with the elven rewards.  The next version will be rewritten from scratch so it's unlikely to appear.   We'll have new bugs instead.

It's this year for sure but I can't say when.  Pre-summer is a realistic guess.  It just depends on the time available to work on it.

The texture optimization in .808 was limited because I didnt know much at the time.   That version can use up to 700+ mb if you check your taskbar while its running.  WHen you are not in battle, that's all loaded into system memory by m&b and not video memory. If you are light on either system memory or video memory it can cause an early crash in the mod which can appear in various forms.

A few scripting issues can manifest much later in the .808 mod but when there is an early problem with the mod it's always been one of two things; a memory issue or an installation issue.   This thread has some info for trying to solve both.   If it still doesnt work youll have to wait for the port, which has more content but uses less memory.

Yeah, it could go out without dwarves but there is still a ton of work.  Im not even sweating dwarves yet.

I expect thorgrim will find some interest eventually.   Hard to predict when modding inspiration and available free time line up.

I have no idea.  But TLD is coming out with an expanded northern war either way.  The role of dwarves might now depend on how much thorgrim can do with brfedit.

Its probably the graphics card.  TLD for .808 was very piggy on memory.  I organized things as best as I knew how at the time but under load it can still use 700+mb iirc.   The port will very likely be slimmer, even with the additions.   Not having enough memory when it needs it will get you a C++ error iirc (and other odd behavior).

The two most likely causes for problems on start-up (or not starting at all) are an installation problem/conflict or inadequate memory.  If anyone has the start-up problem and can't fix it by playing with those, youll just have to wait for the 1.01 port.  Or whatever the version is at that point.
