The Last Days / Official status of the mod - UPDATED/ January 2th 2014
« on: April 11, 2013, 07:01:56 am »
OK, just so you four-or-so guys still playing TLD know, Cpp's notebook crossed river Styx into the dark lands of dead hard drives, so official TLD development is pretty much stopped. We've had a nice couple of scenes made by Temuzu for the Lost Spears quest, but nobody to implement them. ;)

Yep. Another LP? This time it's me! Let me know if I should continue, do ask questions and stuff, tell me my fighting sucks etc. etc. ;)

The Last Days / TLD goes Open Source - Merry Christmas!
« on: December 24, 2012, 04:10:50 am »

After many years of development, we feel the mod has gone as far as we could take it. By ourselves at least.
We've considered quite a few options and decided on the following:

1) The Last Days becomes and open source pack. (OSP)
2) The 3.22 patch is the last big one. Small bugfixes and balance patches will follow, but we'll all take a break from TLD. May be a definite one, might be temporary, we don't know yet. We'll see what Mount and Blade 2 looks like. ;)
3) While some kind of development will continue in our internal SVN, we'd be really happy if a dedicated team chose to port to Warband accepting the core concept of TLD. We'd provide all the support we could to such a project.
4) Of course, it's OSP for EVERYONE, so feel free to make all the horrible abominations you ever wanted to. ;) I can see the movie items replacing our own already. PLATE FRIGGIN' ARMOUR! I know.
5) Merry Christmas from all of us!  :!:

What do you get?

1. All the graphics and sound/music assets. Grab them from the mod as it is for download on ModDB.
2. The source code. (either on ModDB, or here:
3. A google doc with quest outlines :
4. If you're interested in such a thing, we can send you a plan of features TLD was supposed to have, but which we never got to implementing. A more or less current buglist as well.

What we ask of you? (aka the conditions of the OSP)

"1 - Music is to be used as is, without editing in anyway, shape or form. This includes using parts or the whole to create music, or merge with other copyright works.
2 - Credit must be given to Composer Vladan Zivanovic with a link to web site. This is to direct other modders to free music which will be available for use under same terms.
3 - A link to mods page should be sent to the composer, using website contact page would be easiest."

1. Don't use any of the assets for commercial purposes. (feel free to use them to mod other games though)
2. Give us credit if you use our stuff. (if you want to credit specific creators, here's our own credit list:,2465.0.html)
3. Optional: Tell us about what you're doing with this OSP, preferably in this thread. Show it off! :)

Lastly - if you ever contributed to TLD and do not agree with your contribution being included in the OSP, let me know!

The Last Days / MERP gets a CaD letter from WB

Any bets if we'll get one too? Or are we too old school and underground? ;P

The Last Days / TLD Podcast *latest episode - 02*
« on: December 12, 2011, 06:19:43 am »
What?! We did a podcast?! Yes! It's just me talking, so give it a listen if you want to hear me stutter and wrestle with the English language. And possibly learn stuff about the next patch. ;)

(also, if you have any questions you'd like to hear answered on a hypothetical future episode, post them here. :))

The Last Days / [POLL/HELP] Horizontally turned flower bug, do you have it?
« on: December 11, 2011, 06:37:03 am »
There is a specific type of flower (white petals) that we placed in several scenes - in Lossarnach near the player spawn point, in Edoras near the burial mounds and in most Elven settlements all over.

For some reason, some people see the flowers turned to their side 90 degrees and happily clipping with the ground, instead of being upright like all good flowers are.

Please, help us find the culprit of this obscure bug! Vote in the poll, post screenshots and your specifications so that we can gather a larger pool of info about this!

The Last Days / TLD 3.01 - Bug Reports
« on: November 07, 2011, 01:01:03 pm »
Before reporting "RGL ERROR: get_shader failed for: windy_flora", or writing being messed up, or being unable to hit enemies make sure you did the installation procedure correctly. Check FAQ. And run IronLauncher.exe from your mod folder, instead of running mount&blade.exe from MB folder.

While posting a bug report, please state at least the following:
1) type of the bug (such as "CTD/weird item/balancing issue...etc.") like this: "CTD"
2) action you were performing when the bug appeared. (equipping items, talking to a smith, killing a warg, having a huge battle ... etc.)
3) if it's a one time thing, or if you managed to repeat the bug - tell us how to replicate the bug in our game. Nore that info about how to replicate bug is the most helpful bugreporting part for us.
4) your computer specification - especially if the bug is a performance issue. (CPU, amount of RAM, GPU, if you have a sound card, OS...)

Known bugs
0. Random crashes in big battles - will be less random as we slowly optimize more and more. For now, lower your graphics settings, switch off ragdolls, make sure you run enhanced MB1.011
0.1 DX7 is not tested at all - there should be loads of visual bugs there
1. Many trees do not have collisions - working on it, partly MB bug.
2. Flower meshes sometimes generate flipped on side in Lossarnach, Edoras, elven settlements - we are still hunting that one.
3. Mountain backdrops not appropriate to geography  in some battlescenes - working on those
Remaining discovered bugs
0. different scene/item/troop/typo bugs. no need to mention each, will be fixed instantly
4. cant deliver supplies to a guy used for other quest alreadycant replicate
9. AI enemy riders tally too long on battlemap before engaging
24. Female NPCs are referred to as male by other NPCs
25. When lots of trees are spawned on a random battlemap, graphics glitches appear
26. Captured settlements do not correctly display some info (names of place & castle, recruits)
29. Sword of Westernesse behaves strange in combat cant replicate
33. opponent horses clutter the fied after enough waves of gauntlet. not a problem
36. Brick wall textures upside down for some Gondor props
38. Siege can't be won until gate is destroyed
52. Sticky place on map on a hill near Aldburg fixed in svn
53. Giving troops to barracks loops inside menu (tab out of it for now)
54. Good guys treat manflesh as ordinary food
55. Night goblins quest still bugged
56. Script errors after fainlif to escort refugees fixed in svn
57. Calechir is peddling goods in several places at once
58. Reward huge warg keeps biting people inconsistently. Orcs/uruk/hai are supposed to be able ride.
59. Elven mounted archers do not use their bows
60. Gondorian towns sell inappropriate equipment (Cair Andros has ranger stuff, Henneth Annun has Lamedon stuff etc.)

Please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Last Days / TLD 3.3 Crashes/Performance/Optimization tips
« on: November 04, 2011, 04:27:38 am »
TLD specific tips that seem to help:

      1. If getting crashes in battles (either RGL errors, or just no message crashes)
      • Install the Enhanced version of MnB! It helps 99% people.
      • Turn off ragdolls.   (explanation: the ragdoll engine in MaB is really old and doesn’t like our custom skeletons. Experience says this prevents many crashes mid battle.)
      • Lower your battlesize. Try lowering it slowly and see what amount of troops your computer manages to handle.
      • Lower corpses in Options. Try lowering it slowly and see what amount of troops your computer manages to handle. (turn them off competely to be sure)
      • Try setting ‘IronLauncher.exe’ and ‘mount&blade.exe’ compatibility to WinXP (some users say WinXP SP3 doesn’t work, try SP2 in that case)
      • (warning: This option is only for competent computer users! DO NOT TRY THIS UNLESS YOU’RE ABSOLUTELY SURE YOU KNOW WHAT YOU’RE DOING!) - Try increasing your page file to 1.5x - 2x your amount of RAM.
      • (warning: This option is only for reasonably able computer users!! If you're not sure how, there's a thread about it somewhere. Search for that. ) - If you have Win7 and enhanced version (M&B.exe 2.0Mb in size) try set it as "Large Address Aware". E.g. by using CFF explorer to edit exe under 'File Header>Characteristics>click here> and check "app can handle >2gb address space", (hat tip Barf)
        2. If getting crashes in sieges, but not battles
        • Lower your battlesize to about half of your normal BS, or lower. (explanation: sieges handle the troop amounts in a different way, experience says this helps avoid crashes during sieges.)
siege spawning toned down in 3.01 patch
          3. If getting bad performance (stuttering, low fps)
          • Consider installing this:,2912.0.html
          • Lower texture detail slowly until you see improvement. Some people say even 90% helps, some need to go lower.
          • Turn off troop names and the damage/kill report, they slow the engine down quite a bit.
          • In the most extreme cases, try playing in DX7 mode. It’s not pretty, but it’ll allow you to play.

            4. If getting corrupted save games
You'll know you ran into the save corruption bug if: you load your game and it crashes after a few seconds of movement on the world map.
            • Try saving your games while being inside the scene (e.g. in cities or in a camp), not on the global map.
            • When you encounter a crash-prone save, try copy and rename the "last_savegame_backup.sav" to e.g. sg01.sav in MB saves folder, and continue playing with very little in-game time lost.

Good advice to avoid save corruption:
If you have any backup saves from before that, load it and and set the number of parties on map to a much lower number in the TLD options from the action menu. It's set to 850 by default which seems to cause the problem for a lot of people. My save first got corrupted around day 238, I loaded a save from day 218 or something, lowered the army count to 800, crashed again in a few days, then I lowered it to 750 and I've been error free since, over 300 days now. I guess it probably depends on your computer specs, not being able to handle too many scouts or whatever roaming around, so if you're already crashing at day 80-something, you might want to lower it a lot, maybe 500-600?
Keep a lot of backup saves as well!
Always back-up saves if you are playing on realistic. Use more than one save slot otherwise (all of them, just go through them in a cycle). I change save-slots every 30 game days, so if a save corrupts, I only lose around 30 days game-time. You can also rename last_savegame_backup.sav to one of the sg0*.sav files if it's still good.

              5. If your screen shakes/jumps and shadows flicker
              • Hi,
It was me who wrote about problems with the screen "jumping/jiggering" when hovering the mouse over menus and about the flickering shadows and flickering mouse. The problem was so random that I thought I manage to solve it through running the game in Windows XP mode. Now I know that this was not a correct solution (I will edit my post on the board later. Now for the solution (which I think you maybe want can add to your optimization thread). The problem with the "jumping/jiggering" shadows lied in HDR mod included in TLD. The solution is to change EnableMotionBlur=0 in enbseries.ini. The flickering shadows and the flickering/no mouse problem is caused by crossfire. If you disable the crossfire option (in CCC) the problem disappears. For dual-GPU owners it may be a problem because you can not turn of Crossfire through CCC. There is a program named RadeonPro ( through which you can disable crossfire in dual-GPU graphic cards.

                Thank you

                More general tips:
                • Optimize Mount and Blade itself - many useful tips can be found here:,6.0.html
                • We’ve already converted sounds to .wav, to increase performance and avoid the vertex buffer crashes. Still, if you’re getting these crashes, try buying and installing a sound card.
                • A low quality soundtrack might improve performance and reduce crashes. Simply overwrite all the appropriate music files.

                • Save often. The game will crash, for some more than for others. Be especially careful with large battles, sieges and going into complex scenes (large settlements and so on).
                • Flora is optimized as well as we can make it, but once in a while the generation of trees and grass will go crazy and you’ll end up in a jungle scene which may crash the game. Unfortunate, but we haven’t found a way to fix this yet.
                • Get more RAM. A better GPU will result in smoother play and nicer graphics, but lack of RAM seems to cause frequent crashes. Especially if you’re running Windows7, you definitely need at least 4GB of RAM.

                Porting FAQ:

Q: When is the release date?
A: For the 1.011 version it was October 31, 2011. For Warband? February 15th 2014.

                Q: Why don't you keep a developer's log/tell the community about progress?
A: Short answer is that it accomplishes little and takes too much time. Time that could be, and is, better spent making real progress on the mod. There's also the fact that people tend to try to construe release dates out of every update we post, which can get old very fast. However, the major factor is that we like to keep things a secret so that it will be a surprise. If we posted everything we do, a lot of the 'springing a big surprise' enjoyment is gone. We want to give you all a pleasant shock.

Q: Will you port to Warband after the 1.011 release?
                A: We have.

Q: You've been porting this for over four years, why couldn't you do it faster?
A: The main project creator, Ancientwanker, was porting TLD by himself until April 2009. Even us on the Dev team at the time don't know how far he got, or how close to a release he was. In April, AW vanished without a trace. It took several months for the rest of the team to realize and come to grips with the fact that he wasn't coming back, and then decide to continue on without him. The main reason it is taking so long is because AW was the only one with the original code. We have had to rewrite all of the code one hundred percent from scratch, and over 95% of the graphics have also been completely redone. In essence, we since June we have been making TLD almost completely from scratch. That's what has been taking us so long.

Q: Why are the Devs psychopathic maniacs who hate everyone?
A: Fair question. I know it often seems that we come down hard on people, or are just plain bad tempered, but please try to bear with us. Firstly, we've been at this a long time, and the continual repetition of the same old questions would begin to tell on anyone. Secondly, we all have lives. Some of us are hard up college students, most of us have jobs, and all of us have lives outside the computer. We work on TLD in our spare time, and for enjoyment. That enjoyment can begin to pall when people start demanding things as if they have a right to our time or work. I would say this is largely why TLD development is as hush hush as it is. We're here to have fun, we aren't a corporation. Most of the time it's simply easiest not to say anything, and work at our own sustainable pace

The FAQ and Manual is here:

                Dear TLD fans  8-)

The Last Days Of The Third Age Of Middle Earth Mod 3.3, for Mount&Blade 1.011 and now also for Warband is, after many years, finally released!

TLD 3.3 for M&B 1.011 (and for Warband) can be downloaded here:

                FULL VERSION:

A low quality soundtrack might improve performance and reduce crashes. Simply overwrite all the appropriate music files.

You may also want to try some submods for TLD:

WARNING: these are likely outdated, check if they're updated for the Warband port yet!
                1) Mod introducing Warband-like animations,2889.0.html
                2) Mod introducing female versions of many armors,2489.0.html
                3) Realistic Combat Model (RCM) - overhauls item stats to strive for more realistic combat

NOTE! Before you explode with joy, and start soiling the topic with telling us about your ejaculations and such, we must add a sobering warning:
The release IS NOT bug free, in fact we already know some, and expect MANY more unexpected bugs, appearance of broken stuff, crashes, etc to start pouring in reports by you, the players. Hence the bug reports will be welcomed on our MBX forum. The next couple of months will then be used for making ready and available patches and additional features to the mod, ones that we simply did not have time to add in now. That will also mean that any game progress you will make will be lost when any patch comes, as it will most likely NOT BE save game compatible. After a patch ALWAYS start a new game or you will report non-existent bugs carried over in the save game.
