February 10th 2007
Thanks to the help of Hellequin, I have now FINALLY given the units firearm skills. Now they'll actually aim better. I've changed Marnid and Borcha now, nothing big, just their names and what Marnid wants to join you. You now also get 1000 gold for paying your army, and an army ration item that you have in your inventory when you start. These luxurys will probably be removed later, so enjoy them while you can.

Made indians, added the bess rifle!

January 31st 2007
Made muskets a bit more accurate.

January 20th 2007

Ok I played it. Quite fun.. but really unifinished ja? I mean the best things it has going for it are the uniforms and items from PN. The troop trees are bloody weird with infantry changing nationality or becoming cavalry... but still as it's the only horse and musket mod out there for 0.8 right now, yay. Melee muskets are useless, infantry is virtually helpless due to their inability to parry. The fact that you can't swing them either isn't really your fault I guess as we have no good way of doing clubbing right now.

Gonna make them be able to parry, and I'm also gonna disinclude cavalry from infantry, and give the french and hessians their own troop trees.

is it just me, or are the musket's insanely too small? because it's pretty silly at the moment to use those toy muskets you've put in.

I just had a look at the mod i don't see anything wrong with the guns if Nethros wants to rescale them i guess he could but there fine to me. I will say the baynets need to be bigger though.

yeah, but that stock looks absolutely useless. might as well be sawed-off. i'm sure you can find someone competent enough to resize it.

And also do you think that you could maybe make the muskets a little more accurate... it really frusterating to shoot at an ememy whos maybe 10 feet away and clearly see the bullet go straight through their head and them shoot back at you and get a headshot :(

Yep, don't fall to the stereotype of the smoothbore musket, they were reasonably accurate and having fired one I would hazard that it would be easy to hit a man from standing with him running at 30 metres, and easy to hit a foot square target from standing at 60 metres.

Y'see the thing about this mod is that the best things about it.. are things others have contributed.. apart from that it is pretty much M&B vanilla with muskets.. which is great for me when I just want to go and shoot some fellows in blue jackets.. but I expect people wanting an accurate depiction of this era might want a little more y'know?

This probably sounds quite harsh... but y'are slightly lacking in the content dept right now..

well. i think you should tone down on the amount of continental soldiers there. there weren't quite as many as there are now LAWL. also you should make them crouch as the reload muskets. this was the proper thing that the rifle men did. so that there wasn't much friendly fire. as i find there is now lol. and another question are you gonna make it so bandits use rifles?

I don't think Indians would have had Brown bess muskets, except for the few allied to the British.

Infantrymen were drilled to reload standing as it required less skill (both the musket and ramrod are very long making for a lot of stretching when reloading for the knee.). Don't believe the movies, infantry only knelt in special circumstances, otherwise they were kept standing so that they could more readily change formation to receive cavalry, break into loose formation or charge with bayonets.

You can bring more guns to bear in two lines without reducing your manoeuvrability, I.e. to fire in three ranks one rank would have to kneel, meaning that if a regiment of dragoons popped out of the woods to your right you'd be a lot more pressed to form square.
Also in double rank a battalion can hold a longer stretch of ground which is handy to create longer battle lines if your army isn't that big.

Besides the fact that kneeling isn't possible on the engine as of yet, and you bring the exact same number of weapons to bear in two ranks as you would in three with the front kneeling and as Hussey said, you cover more line.

I'm just gonna quote from my post from the PN thread.

Quote
Release dates just stress out the modders, if they're doing something big. When they can't release their mod at the release date, people start complaining and lose interest in the mod, when it's actually their own fault cause they request release dates. So just sit down, try being busy and wait for the mod to come.

Please mate, no more of this internet slang crap. It doesn't matter how old you are, you can at least take the time and effort to type like a human being on these forums. It's in the forum rules and one of the reasons for the move, so please type out complete English sentences.

Developers diary update.

Indians?

This mod is set in the Anglo-American war, it is The Perennial Nuisance which is set in India.

Yes.  I meant Indians of North America.  Now, they may be known as Native Americans, but in 1776 (and in the mod description) the term was certainly "Indians".

Whats a grenadier, I always thought they were dudes that threw grenades, but lately I've seen quite a few grenadiers without their namesake weapons, so what exactly is a grenadier?

a grenadier is a shock trooper.

The term does originate from that, it springs from the 17th and early 18th century when grenadiers were chappies with great big cast iron balls full of gun powder, which they lit from linstocks at their belts and flung towards the enemy. As the 17th century progressed it grew apparent that grenades were too dangerous to their own side so although the grenades went, the grenadiers remained. As the early grenades were great big heavy objects Grenadiers were selected for size and strength, therefore they acted as shock troops, first into the hand to hand combat style of thing, this meant that they maintained a useful role in armies even after the removal of their namesake weapons, and the term grenadier to describe shock troops was used by WW2 period Germany (the panzer Grenadiers - infantry support for Panzer regiments) and I believe many armies (including the British) still have regiments or companies of Grenadiers.

I answered the same question in the PN thread.

what kind of error? because on my old unreleased mod I had tonnes of errors that I eventually figuered out. I know that if you store materials, or textures in the same brf fileas meshes it fucks up the game i dunno why, and you cant give one troop to many itm options... dont know if this helps...

Sorry for the double post, but I felt this would be important.

For now, Liberty or Death will be on a pause. I currently have lots of stuff to solve, but too little time and motivation. The new version will probably come at the end of summer, or even later. I'm very sorry about this, because Liberty or Death is my favourite project that I enjoyed working with.

I will not give out any source, but you are free to contribute any code, texture or model freely. Ideas would be appreciated greatly too.

I hope this is alright with you guys.

Just to tell you I love your mod! All it needs is a new map ,and properly equipped npcs in towns ,and the mod would be complete. Maybe if you had a siege system it would be even better. Id be willing to help you if youd accept.
Title: Re: Liberty Or Death - On a big pause (Page 7)
Post by: Nethros on July 22, 2007, 03:59:17 AM
Thanks, but no thanks.

A siege system is what I plan to do in the end. I haven't even finished fixing the gameplay.

And I also can't continue until I've fixed the error I have. I'm too stupid to understand what everyone means when I ask them about it.

Double post!

I've fixed the damn error. I went through all the items, copying and pasting until I found the source of the error. Had something to do with the native missiles.

To everyone who likes my mod: Rejoice. Liberty or Death is back in action.

Please give me suggestions of what to do now until I have enough for the next version.

maybye I made a rather large map before for a hastings mod I was trying, although I failed at that mod, so the map is probably gone, as long as its only mapping and you dont want me making cities and stuff, its easy as spit really, just time consuming to make a good map...

Sorry for the double post, but..stupid me. I forgot to give you the map

This is the map I want you to make. (The dark red area)

I'll give you a list of the original town names and tell you what they've been changed into (So for example, Reyvadin = New Hampshire) but it's your decision whether you want to place them or not.

EDIT: I've made a troop diagram for the continentals. I'm still working on the british troops, so that one will have to wait a while.

Learn to spell, punctuation and stop using stupid chat speak expressions. Cut down on the smiley thing too. However the way to install this is to take all those files which should be in a folder and put them into your modules folder in Mount and Blade.

Yea, Sorry, Nethros, even Mature people may laugh at such a post.  Well, Anyway...

To the maker.
1) You cheated when testing the game. Did you test without cheating as well? Many mod makers tend to forget that.
2) I think the suits are a little to ... cartoonish. Those textures seem to clean, and... ... Can't explain it. Just very, very, very unrealistic.

I will try the game itself out.  :o *Downloads*

1) No, not really. But to be completely honest, I cheat anyways.
2) Well, let's put it this way. Either they all look clean, or they're all shitty with a dirt spot on their chest. Which one is the more realistic now?

For the rebels, the latter and for the British the former.
Well, it'd still look more realistic if they were clean than if they all had dirt, blood, etc at the same spot on their uniforms.

Details, shmetails.

Besides, I'd rather focus on the major part of the war for now. After that, I might focus on the smaller parts. (Especially the indians, with their crappy troop tree and all)

Custom Map of the Colonies!

I made this for 0.808.  It's pretty rough representation of the colonies, but at least it's something.
At the moment you can't get to New York, but that should be no problem with 0.894's 'ford' terrain type.
